Frequently asked questions
The questions we get most often. If yours is not here, WhatsApp is the fastest way to ask.
How does an order work?
You tell us the occasion, the date, the number of servings and the idea you have in mind; a picture you like is often enough to get started. We come back to you with a proposal and a price. Nothing starts until you have approved it. The cake is then ready for the day, to collect in Ouakam or to be picked up by a car we can arrange for you.
How far in advance should I order?
It depends on the section. Desserts are made the same day, subject to availability. Allow 24 hours for a Standard Cake, 48 hours for a Kids Cake, and 72 hours for a Custom Cake or a Sport Cake. The form applies these lead times and will not let you pick a date that is too close. If your date is tighter than that, write to us anyway: we will tell you honestly whether it can be done.
Do you deliver in Dakar?
We do not deliver ourselves, so that our cakes reach you intact: they can be fragile, and a motorbike ride is hard on them.
We can arrange a Yango car at your request and at your expense, to collect and carry your order.
Once the cake has been handed to the driver and has left our premises, Ships Cake cannot be held responsible for any damage caused in transit or handling.
We recommend a car rather than a motorbike, to give your cake the best chance of arriving as it left.
How does payment work?
Nothing is charged when you fill in the form. We first confirm availability and price; payment is then arranged directly with us, before preparation begins.
Once the deposit has been paid, it is not refundable.
Can you work from a photo found online?
Yes, and it is usually the most efficient starting point. We take inspiration from it rather than copying it exactly: proportions, colours and techniques are adapted to the size you order. We send you a design before starting, so there is no misunderstanding.
Can I see the cake before it is made?
For a bespoke creation, yes: we send you a design before we start, and nothing is baked until you have approved it. For an item from the menu, the photo shows the cake as it was made; just tell us what you would like changed.
What flavours do you offer?
Four flavours for cakes: vanilla, vanilla-chocolate, chocolate and caramel. You can add one or more extras at 5,000 FCFA each: Nutella, Oreo, speculoos, Kinder, white chocolate, red berries or pineapple. Everything is picked when you order, and the price follows. Desserts carry their flavour in their name. Something not on the list? Ask, and we will tell you whether it can be done.
How should I store the cake?
To preserve the taste, the texture and the decoration, your cake design should stay in the fridge, in its box, until about 30 minutes to 1 hour before it is served.
Avoid sunlight, high heat, and above all leaving the cake in a car without air conditioning. In Dakar, heat can quickly spoil the cream and weaken the decoration.
What about allergies or dietary requirements?
Tell us in your request, in the « anything else » field. Our recipes commonly contain gluten, eggs, dairy and nuts, and are made in a workshop where those ingredients circulate. We will tell you honestly what we can adapt and what we cannot guarantee.
Can I change or cancel my order?
As long as preparation has not started, a change is usually possible: message us on WhatsApp as early as you can. Once decoration is under way, some changes are no longer possible. We will tell you clearly where your order stands.
A deposit already paid is not refundable, whatever becomes of the order.
Are you open on Mondays?
No, the workshop is closed on Mondays. We are open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 8pm. No collection is possible on a Monday, and the form will not let you pick that date.
